Caleb smirked in triumph, closed the book and reshelved it. Neither spoke as they walked out of the library and down the quad toward Franklin Street.

“How’d you know to do that?”

“What? Oh, just call me Bond, James Bond.” He smiled.

She quirked her eyebrow, and he laughed.

“The name of the book referred to history and spies and that page deals with ancient methods of secret messages. I learned the invisible ink thing in an elementary school science project. Historically, it was one of the first means of passing covert communications. You use cornstarch melted in water and a toothpick, or in those days a bird feather, to write. It dries clear but heat turns it brown.”

“I’ve never heard of that.”

“Sam, it was basic knowledge in elementary school. Every boy I know tried it at some point.”

“Well, that explains it. I don’t have the right body parts.”

“And thank God for that.”

She scowled at him. “Ben took a chance believing I could figure that one out.”

“It was described on that page,” said Caleb. “You would have eventually read the page.”

She walked in silence a moment. Her voice was barely audible when she spoke again. “He thought he’d be safe. Whatever this is, he thought he was safe and we’d be together again.” Her voice hitched.

Caleb’s heart twisted, but he restrained from pulling her into his arms. “We’ll find his killer, Sam. I promise.”

Sam nodded and after a few minutes spoke again. “Where are we going now?”

“The friend I talked to last night said he’d leave a car for us in the parking garage just behind Franklin Street.”

“What about your car?”

“The city will tow it. I’ll pick it up when we get back. We can’t risk Brown-Suit-Guy tracking us. And Sam there is something else I didn’t tell you last night.”

She waited.

“That homeless guy—” he began. “Well, he’s dead.”

Sam whirled to face him. “What? How do you know? Why didn’t you tell me? We had a deal. I thought I could trust you.”

“Damn it, Sam, I’m telling you now. You can trust me. I just got the call last night. He showed up at the morgue. Coroner thinks it was an overdose,” he hesitated. “But I’ve got someone following up on it. A private investigator. She has her doubts and is digging a bit deeper. She’ll let us know.”

“Us?” The word dripped with sarcasm.

“Shit. Me. She’ll let me know, and I’ll tell you.”

“And I’m supposed to believe that?”

“Sam, you needed some sleep and food. That’s the only reason I waited to tell you. If you collapse, you won’t be any help with all this.”

“I won’t collapse! And it’s not your job to protect me; it’s your job to defend me. I want to know everything the minute you know it. Got it? That was the deal.”

Anger sparked in Caleb’s eyes. “Fine. Got it. I tell you every gory detail as it unfolds.”

She stared at him, saying nothing.

“I swear,” he barked, angry that she didn’t trust him.

Sam nodded and began walking again. “I need your phone.
